Kombucha...that wasn't a sneeze

When you hear the word kombucha, you might be wondering what it is...or if you're looking at the picture to the right, you're thinking "eww, gross".

For a quick definition, it is a fermented tea with all sorts of health benefits. In our house, we refer to it as "Moonshine" or "Pappy's Squeezins" because, afer all, it is a fermented homemade brew. Here's a link to a more in- depth definition.

You might be thinking I sound a little crazy for condoning it, but there are some undeniable health benefits to drinking kombucha. If you've ever been sick with a virus such as the flu or a cold, drank some kombucha, and quickly recovered, you understand all of the hoopla surrounding it.

Some claim that kombucha can help your liver with detoxification, which could be the key to its potency in speeding up recovery for some illnesses. Others have taken it as far as aiding in treating cancer. If you've ever heard of GT's Kombucha, you've probably heard the story surrounding it. Something to think about!

It's not a new fad but rather something that people have been rediscovering recently. You're likely to find it in any health food stores such as Whole Foods and possibly smaller natural supplement stores. Some brands (mostly GT's) are starting to pop up in major supermarkets as well.

The best resource I've found for making your own kombucha is Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions, which you can get at most bookstores. It can be a little tricky at first and must be done carefully to avoid contamination (very important). However, I believe it's the way to get the most health benefits out of drinking the brew. The fresher, the better!

If you hate the taste, try some tea bags instead like Yogi Tea Kombucha Green Tea. However, in my opinion, the best option is freshly brewed. The more you drink it, the more you enjoy the taste.

Give it a chance. Start sipping!
