A Little Quilt Show

I first want to state that I am not a bona fide quilter.  Nevertheless, I do enjoy seeing other’s take on quilts.

This weekend, Austin area quilters are holding a quilt show.  Because Austin is a very creative town, I wanted to see what local quilters were doing.

Many of the quilts used traditional patterns like churn dash and log cabin.  However, there were a few that stood out. 

I must first apologize for these pictures.  I brought my point and shoot camera and my pictures are abysmal.  But, you should still be able to see some of our local talent.

 

Can you believe this is a quilt?  It’s called Songbird by Barb Forrister.  She created this from a photo she took on the way to her father-in-law’s funeral.  What a beautiful way to honor a loved one.

I love this interpretation of Piet Mondrian’s art, called Modern Mondrian by Connie Hudson.  I think me and Connie could be kindred spirits.

This quilt made me think of Georgia O’Keefe who is one of my favorite artists ever.  It’s called White Summer Bloom by Andrea Brokenshire.  The artist hand dyed her fabrics to get this look, and then she quilted it!  Such talent.

I loved this heritage quilt done in modern gray fabrics.  It’s called Daniel’s Grey Quilt by Harriet Turner.  This is a simple log cabin diamond pattern.  Perfect quilt for that special guy in your life.

I talk a lot about applique on this blog, but, this takes the cake.  The cyclist is an applique and the words are quilting stitches.  It’s called Fifty and Female and Fabulous by Kathy York.  Some people are just sooooo talented.

I almost didn’t include this picture because it is so blurry, but this was my favorite quilt at the show.  And, I don’t think I was alone in my sentiments, judging by the crowd gathering around it.  It’s called Midori by Carol Cirone AND it is her first quilt.  I love the offset squares and the colors.  I wish I had a better picture.

As a added bonus, I ran into a friend I knew from our old church life in Corpus.  She now lives here in Austin.  She had several pieces in the show.  I had no idea she was so talented.

I cringe when I see my pictures, but I really wanted to share some of these fabulous quilts with you.
