If you are joining for the first time, catch up here.

Today’s topic is Needles. Specifically, machine embroidery needles.

Did you know that there is an enormous variety of sewing machine needles?  Needles for knits, needles for metallic thread, needles for leather, etc.

And, there are needles specifically designed for machine embroidery.

Machine embroidery needles are designed to work well with rayon and polyester threads.
The reason you need a special needle for machine embroidery is found in the eye.  It is enlarged so that it protects the thread as it rapidly goes in and out during machine embroidery.

Embroidery needles are like a universal needle for machine embroidery.  Good for most embroidery.

However, if you want to embroider on knits, then you will want to use a needle designed for knits.  Ball point needles do not leave holes and that is very important with machine embroidery.

For the most part, you will only need Embroidery needles with the exception of knits.

If you want to get fancy-schmancy and use metallic thread, then you will need to use Metallic needles, leather needles for embroidering on leather, etc.

Recently, several needle manufacturers have started making Titanium Embroidery needles.  These are the absolute, hand’s down best needles out there for machine embroidery.

They will likely be sold through dealers or online.  They are so durable that I’ve only opened one package. What a deal!

While I have highlighted Schmetz needles, there are other needle manufacturers of high quality needles such as Klasse and Organ.

Because Joann’s carries Schmetz, they are the most widely available needles {and they can be purchased with a coupon}.  Woot!

Personally, I’ve used all three brands and they all perform extremely well.
