Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day...hmmmm...let me see.   Will I be getting a beautiful bouquet of red roses delivered directly to me in a highly dramatic way - uh, no!  Will there be some adorable teddy bear sitting on my bed wearing a sash that says something cheesy like, "Be mine."  Highly unlikely.  Will there be a candle lit dinner at some quiet little Austin restaurant...nope!  Can you imagine the crowds! 

Clearly, I am not really the romatic in my family, however, my sweet husband is and he would likely do any or all of these things if he thought they would bring me even a drop of joy.  Instead, he has learned that gifts that die (ie. flowers) aren't things I am interested in...if you're going to spend $50 on a gift, I'd like it to last more than a few days, thank you very much.

Isn't it true that it really is the small things that matter.   In 33 years, I can never recall a day when my man brought me flowers, but he has more than once whispered to me those magically romantic words that many a frazzled mom has yearned to hear, "Honey, let's eat out tonight." 

Let's be clear, here.  While I won't be getting roses on Valentine's Day, let me assure you that I am not sad about this...and here is why.  When I yawn and stretch at the end of a long day, my bed is already unmade and ready for me.  When I rise in the morning, bleary-eyed, the coffee is just about finished.  When I say, "I want to dig up all of the plants in this flower bed over here and move them to that flower bed over there, he grabs the shovel and smiles. And when I casually mention how I would like another sewing machine that will retail in the neighborhood of $9,000 (gasp!!!!), he looks over and smiles.  

Who needs roses, anyway...
