Towel Embellishment Tutorial

I am working fast and furiously getting together a few more items for the Learn About It! class that I will be teaching in June.  If you recall, Learn About It! is an opportunity for women in our church that have a talent or skill to share it with others in a relaxed format.  My topic is Applique and Embellishment.

This tutorial is so simple you will be smacking yourself in the head.  But here goes...

I'm sure most of you already get it, but for those novices out there I'm going to include some supplies and  a few steps.

SUPPLIES:
2 Cheap Quality Hand Towels w/band a few inches from the bottom
1 Yard of Ribbon that will fit inside the band
Unique Stitch Fabric Glue (use a coupon at Joanns)
Thread that blends - be sure to put a thread in the bobbin that will match the towel

Step1.
Wash the towels.  Don't skip this step or your towel will shrink and your ribbon won't!

Step 2.
Lay your towel open on a flat surface and set the ribbon in the channel.  Allow ribbon to extend at least 1/2" beyond the towels edges.  This will be folded under in another step.

Step 3.
Fold under the raw edges of the ribbon and glue the ribbon to the towel.  Pin in place and let dry for at least 1 hour.  This is the part where I go sit on the sofa, watch reruns and twirl my hair.

If you've sewn with me before, you may now realize that I am unable to sew anything without using at least a few drops of Unique Stitch!

Step 4.
Now for the fun part...the sewing.  For this project I used a small blanket stitch that is on my Bernina.  If you have a machine with a quilting package, you probably have this stitch.  My stitch width is a little over 2mm and my stitch length is a little over 2.5mm.

If you have a zigzag stitch, that would look nice.  Also a straight stitch will work.  You could straight stitch on the selvages of the ribbon.  For zigzag or straight stitching I would recommend that you keep the pins in and only remove them as you sew.

So folks, that's all there is to this project.  Sew simple, sew easy, sew much fun!

I cannot wait to give live back to some of my older bathroom towels. Such a cute idea, thanks!
