What's in a Name

I bet you've always wondered why I decided to name my Etsy store Sugar Pie Chic.  It really is a funny story...

It begins with my dad who grew up during the Depression and WWII when being politically correct wasn't exactly what it is today.  A Texan to the core, a former oil field worker, daddy to three daughters and someone who thinks calling all things female, Sugar Pie is acceptableHere's an example:  Dad might need the salt and look across the kitchen and say to me, "Sugar Pie, can you hand me the salt."   So, I see this as an endearing term.

Well, about 11 years ago, my (then) three year old niece was in the kitchen with my dad when he said, "Sugar Pie, could you hand me the..."  Well, even at three years old, my niece knew enough to not want to always be referred to as Sugar Pie.  So, a budding feminist sprang forth and she responded to my dad, "I'm not Sugar Pie; you're Sugar Pie."  From that day forward, she and all of the grandkids have called my dad Sugar Pie.

My sisters and I think turn around is fair play here and now instead of his grandpa name being PawPaw, PePaw, Papa, Gramps, Grumpy (we know one of these) or any other normal grandpa name, when the grandkids call him, my dad answers to Sugar Pie.

Fast forward a few years...when it came time to name my store, Sugar Pie Chic was a tongue-in-cheek/right-back-atcha-dad way to keep the Sugar Pie thing going on.   As embarrassing as it is to admit, Sugar Pie is a common term in my family and I actually find myself using it with my own grandsons (Oh, the shame!).

But today, Sugar Pie (my dad) is not feeling so well.  He is down at St. Lukes in Houston where ONE OF THE BEST DOCTORS IN THE WORLD removed a tumor from one of his lungs.  The good news:  it doesn't look like it has spread.  The not great news:  the recovery may be slow because he is over 80.

So, today, dear friends, I'm asking you to please pray for Sugar Pie as his body rests and tries to restore.
