To Sew or Not to Sew

On Tuesday I met a few friends over breakfast to celebrate a birthday.  Nothing unusual...just breakfast...at Magnolia Cafe in Tarrytown.  Hot coffee, pumpkin pancakes...just breakfast and some fellowship.  Here's the roster:  Me -  mom to two grown gals, grandma to two boys, middle aged sewing savant (ha! I wish) and dedicated homemaker.   Amy F.- mom, birthday girl and PhD, former UT prof.  Genevieve - mom to the girl in the sparkly Christmas dress, dedicated homemaker who is sweet and thoughtful to the core.  Amanda - mom, teacher,  home remodeler who should have a blog of her own.  Amy W. - corporate attorney turned homemaker.  Some seriously intelligent and driven women who could do almost anything.

So why is this interesting beyond the point that I clearly don't have the intelligence to be hangin' with these gals?  ALL of these women are interested in learning or improving their sewing skills.  They are all beginners who crave a sewing community.   When I mentioned us all visiting some of the area sewing stores there were muffled squeals....

Amazingly, just before Thanksgiving I was at a brunch (I know, it sounds like all I do is go from brunch to brunch, but I don't, this is just a weird coincidence!) when I was introduced as someone who sews.  The gal sitting next to me (someone who has a far more interesting life and even lived in Africa) was so enthralled with sewing and even asked me if I would start a sewing club.

This really got me thinking:  What is it about sewing that attracts smart, driven, intelligent women?  By society's standards, these ladies have it all!  If that is the case, then why would these educated women feel this unexplainable desire to do something menial like sewing?   Aren't the Chinese capable of making any ol' thing our heart desires?

Is it Community that is at the core here?   Is this the new quilting bee?  Have I been tagged as Queen Bee?  While I ponder the meaning of this, I believe I will open my home to some of these ladies and see if the idea of a sewing club has merit.  Perhaps a class trip to Valli & Kim in Dripping Springs.  I hear they have a fabulous selection...

I am also a mother of two grown girls-I have three grandsons-and have rediscovered sewing in the past few years. I would love to take some classes to improve my skills. I sew a pretty good purse, apron, etc. but am trying to sew my own clothes and the fitting issues, sewing with knits...really give me a hard time. I have checked my local area and am coming up empty handed.

How lucky your friends are! I would love to sew with some other ladies, but whenever I mention it my friends look at me like I have absolutely lost my mind.

I also have issues with fit. A-line skirts and simple kids' garments are my repertoire right now. (And I'm a "retired" actuary, mom to four kids and homemaker.)

I wish I lived nearby so I could join you! I just purchased a class and your apron workshop from Craftsy. I am so excited to try it. I am a NEWBIE, big time. I have tried a couple of things with my machine, but I totally made them up and have no clue what to do with a pattern. I will keep you posted. Following along. You can find my handmade haven at the links below. Blessings...
